Every year I read about open tryouts and every year I realize that I am not a good enough player to consider the $1000 it would cost to fly to Florida and get a rental car and a hotel or the 2000 mile drive and I forget about it, but this guy actually did it.
It sounds like he is better than me too. I don't think I could make that throw in my present shape, though I have quit smoking and I am no longer the bartender that had at least one beer a day seemingly for about ten years. In all actuality, my softball game got way better last year because I have been taking better care of myself.
Regardless, I don't think I could hit the ball, even if it was only coming to me at 60 miles an hour. I can't tell if it is going to be a ball or strike on MLB2K7 half the time, how would I hit the actual ball moving at me?
Anyway, my props to this guy. If I am ever in Lakeland for Spring Training and this is going on, I will be going. I will even buy the batting gloves and a pair of baseball pants. I won't make the team, but when my son is the second baseman for the Tigers in 25 years, he will be able to tell his friends that his uncle Charlie is in the hall of fame for the Tigers and his father tried out but didn't make it.
Who knows, maybe everything would come together, and I'd get a contract.
